How to choose a photo for a custom figurine

A favourite photograph can capture a brilliant moment while leaving important details out of view. For a figurine, a clear face and an understandable pose are especially helpful. A professional photoshoot is not essential; a clear reference is the starting point.

Make the face and pose easy to read

Choose a photograph without heavy shadows across the face or objects covering important features. A sharp original is more useful than a small crop enlarged until it becomes blurry. Filters that change facial features can also make the reference harder to interpret.

For a full-body figurine, try to show the legs and feet as well as the upper body. A portrait alone cannot reveal how the person is standing. Another full-body photograph or a description can help clarify the intended pose.

Explain which details matter

A football, a raised arm or the way a couple stands together may be the heart of your idea. Mention these details in your enquiry. If something is hidden in the main photograph, an extra view may help show its shape.

For a couple, make sure both people are clearly visible. Arms, hands and clothing can overlap in ways that look natural in a photograph but require decisions when turned into a small object.

Consider the size of the finished piece

A thin chain, a fingertip or a small gap between an arm and the body may need to be simplified. The planned size affects which details can be represented clearly, so include your preferred dimensions when describing the project.

Formacara’s current offer uses a single PLA filament for the whole figurine. Separate clothing colours are not reproduced. If an outfit matters, its shape and recognisable features are useful references.
